Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) Sedation

Nitrous oxide—commonly known as laughing gas—is a light form of conscious sedation that helps patients relax during dental treatment. It is a safe and effective option for reducing anxiety and discomfort and is inhaled through a small nasal mask mixed with oxygen.

How It Works

• You breathe normally through a nose mask

• Nitrous oxide is introduced gradually to help you relax

• You remain awake, responsive, and comfortable

• Pure oxygen is administered at the end to clear the gas

• Effects begin and wear off quickly

Safety

Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record and is carefully monitored throughout treatment. Because it is eliminated through normal breathing, it does not place stress on the liver or kidneys. Side effects are uncommon and typically mild, such as nausea or dizziness.
